Keeping Your Computer Longer?
By: John Brady - Fox River Networks
People are keeping their computers longer. This is not the statistical result of a scientific survey, it is just what I see in the course of my business. I service older PC’s everyday and work to help their owners get the most value from them. If you are one of the many people still working with an older computer and you would like to use it for a while longer, here are a few things that you should consider.
First (Back it Up):Your computer is a machine that by itself is not worth very much but the contents could be considered priceless. Do you keep digital pictures, music files, your financial records, work or personal documents on your computer? Do yourself a favor and make sure you have a backup of anything that is important to you. All computers will fail eventually and the longer you keep it in service the greater the chance that it will happen to you. I strongly recommend Mozy On-Line backup. This is a Set It & Forget It type of program. It works in the background while your computer is on. You can find a link to Mozy on our website under the partners section. If you have any problem setting this up, I can help. That is what I do after all, I help people with their computers through the Internet. If you are down the street or across the country, Help is Just a “CLICK” Away. Of course Mozy On-Line Back-Up can protect your business too. Get started now. Before it’s too late.
Second (Tune it Up): You can’t expect an older machine to perform as well as a brand new machine but it should be Tuned Up to perform as well as it is able to. There are always a constant stream of security patches and software updates that need to be applied. Your Security Suite should always be kept up to date and only the programs you need should be installed and running. The longer that a computer has been in service the more likely it is to have collected unnecessary or harmful junk. Normal Internet surfing on a computer that is not tuned up and protected can expose you to virus and spyware problems. Our Tune Up Service addresses all of these areas as well as determines if the performance settings on your computer are correct for your use. We Tune Up your computer through the Internet to save you time and money.
Third (Fix it early): Small problems will usually grow into larger problems if they are not taken care of early. If your computer is doing anything that you did not expect it to do, or if it’s not doing the kind of things that you want it to do…call for help. The sooner that problems are identified and fixed, the more likely that you will be able to continue using your computer. Our on-line support has a very low 15 minute minimum charge and it is available when you need it. On-site technicians will make you wait for them and generally have very expensive minimum charges. An older computer can often provide all of the features and reliability that you need as long as you follow these simple suggestions.
